The owners of this Victorian terrace were buying a new electric oven, and the fitter refused to connect it to the old fuse box under the stairs. It still had rewireable fuses, with fuse wire wrapped round ceramic carriers, and no RCD protection at all.
What we did
We tested every circuit first, so there were no surprises once the old board came off. Then we fitted a new metal-cased consumer unit (fire-resistant cases are now required in homes) with an RCBO for each circuit. That way, if one circuit trips, the rest of the house stays on. We added surge protection and labelled every breaker clearly.
The result
Power was off for about five hours, the new oven went in the next day, and we notified Building Control and emailed the owners their Electrical Installation Certificate.
