Can I change a light fitting myself?
What the rules say about DIY electrics in England and Wales, and when it's worth calling an electrician.

Swapping a light fitting for a new one in the same place is allowed as DIY in England and Wales. You must switch off the circuit at the fuse board first, not just at the light switch, and make sure the new fitting is right for the room.
When to call an electrician
- Adding new lights or circuits where there weren’t any.
- Anything in a bathroom close to the bath or shower.
- Work on the fuse board, or adding a new circuit. This is “notifiable” work under Part P and needs signing off.
- If the old wiring is crumbly, the cables have no earth wire, or you’re not sure what you’re looking at.
If in doubt, ask. We’re happy to give a quick answer over the phone.
